48th Assault Helicopter Company - "Blue Stars", "Dancing Snoopys" and "Slickhounds", "Wild Deuces" and "Jokers". - The Joker Patch shown here is the 2nd design for the Joker Patch. It was adapted from Bat Man Comic Books and the 1960’s Television Series Bat Man portraying Bat Man's arch nemesis the Joker played by Cesar Romero as the Joker. The Cesar Romero Joker Patch was worn by the Joker Gunships of the 48th AHC 3rd Flight Platoon from 1966 to 1970 replacing the 1966 original Joker Patch in 1967.

The 48th Aviation Company was activated at Fort Benning, Georgia on 5 July 1965 under the command of Major Keith L. Groom the 48th first Commanding Officer. The 48th Aviation Company was deployed to Vietnam and arrived at Phan Rang on 26 November 1965. On 1 January 1966 the 48th Aviation Company became the 48th Assault Helicopter Company and were declared combat operational by the Commanding Officer, Major Charles H. Drummond Jr. and begin operating as a element of Airmobile Light. Major Roper designed the 48th Company's Crest. The background for the Crest is a Blue Star bordered in Gold, derived from the original and still-in-effect unit call-sign "Blue Stars", centered inside the Blue Star are the numerals "48" in white letters. Lettered in red on a white scroll below the Blue Star is the unit motto "SKILL NOT LUCK". The 48th Helicopters were adorns with a Blue Star trimmed in Gold on their tail section, and the men in the company proudly wore the patch of the 48th AHC Blue Star on their right breast pocket. The 48th AHC had three flight platoons all having their own patches, 1st Flight Platoon the "Dancing Snoopys" and "Slickhounds", 2nd Flight Platoon the "Wild Deuces" and the 3rd Platoon Gunships the "Jokers". The 48th Joker Gunships provided support for the Blue Star Transport Helicopters. The 48th continued their combat assault role until Jan 1971 when they received ordered north to Dong Ha in I Corps to support operation "Lam Son 719". The 48th was one of the last aviation units to leave South Viet Nam. The 48th Stood-down in August 1972 and returned to Fort Benning. The Blue Stars were twice award the Meritorious Unit Commendation and twice the Valorous Unit Award. The Blue Star's were one of the best of the best Assault Helicopter Companies to serve in Viet Nam and helped write the Air Assault Bible in Blood. The Blue Stars and Jokers remain on active duty today as part of Task Force Storm, Company A, 3-158th Aviation Regiment, Shindand Airbase, Afghanistan.
