Description Extended Information

68th Aviation Company - "Top Tigers" and "Mustangs" - The 68th Aviation Company was originally activated at Fort Ord, California on 14 April 1960. The company was inactivated 6 December 1961. The unit was reactivated as the Utility Tactical Transport Helicopter Company on 28 July 1961 and deployed to the Pacific where they made their base on Okinawa where the unit became the Army’s first Utility Tactical Transport Helicopter Company in Aviation History. In October 1962 the Utility Tactical Transport Helicopter Company deployed to Vietnam arriving at Vung Tau. In July 1964 the UUT retired into history and the unit was redesignated once again as the 68th Assault Helicopter Company assigned to the 145th Combat Aviation Group and became part of Airmobile Light. The 68th AHC supported the 18th and 199th ARVN Units as well as U.S. Units operating in III Corps from the Mekong Delta to the rugged mountains around Song Be. The 68th AHC received a young Bangle Tiger Cub as a mascot and the unit was nicked named the “Tigers”, objections from older Tiger Units necessitated a name change and 68th new nickname became the “Top Tigers” true to their motto, “Every Man A Tiger”.

In March 1965 another re-designation occurred and the 68th Assault Helicopter Company became the 197th Armed Helicopter Company. In April 1966 the unit received the Presidential Unit Citation, the first to be awarded since Korea. The 197th relocated from Tan Son Nhut to Bien Hoa and operated in III Corps Tactical Zone. In late September 1966 the 197th was redesignated as the 334th Aerial Weapons Company from the assets of the 197th Armed Helicopter under the Command of Major Floyd C. Gober.

The 334th Aerial Weapons Company was divided into three Cobra Gunship Platoons, 1st Platoon “Playboys”, 2nd Platoon “Raiders”, 3rd Platoon “Dragons”, 4th Platoon “Gangbusters” and the Headquarter “Sabers”. The 334th served in Vietnam until standing-down in May 1972. The unit was awarded the Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm and RVN Civil Actions Honor Medal.
