Description

123rd Aviation Battalion "B" Company Aero Scouts "Warlords" Patch - The 123rd Aviation Battalion was organized and activated on 8 Dec 1967. The first Commanding Officer of the 123rd was Major Frederic W. Watke. The 123rd Aviation Battalion "B" Company Warlords were part of Task Force Oregon and later became a element of the Americal Division and part of Airmobile. The 123rd supported Military Assistance Command Vietnam's (MACV) classified missions into Laos and Cambodia.

The 161st Assault Helicopter Company became the nucleus for the Battalion providing initial assets for the 123rd Battalion Headquarters, "A", "B", and "C" Companies. The 406th Transportation Detachment and the 449th Signal Detachment which had supported the 161st Assault Helicopter Company were reassigned and attached to the 123rd Aviation Battalion on 25 Jan 1968. During January and February of 1968, the activity of the 123rd Aviation Battalion intensified. Key officers and enlisted personnel were assigned to the Battalion. The Commanding General of the Americal Division expanded the mission of the 123rd Aviation Battalion due to the exceptionally large area of operation of the Americal Division requiring an additional Air Cavalry type unit. "B" Company was organized from the Armed Helicopter Platoon of the former 161st Assault Helicopter Company and given the mission as Aero Scouts.

The 14th Combat Aviation Battalion (CAB) attached to Task Force Oregon since April of 1967, contains four Assault Helicopter Companies (AHC); 71st AHC, 161st AHC, 174th AHC and 176th AHC and the 178th Assault Helicopter Support Company furnishes aircraft facilities for the 123rd combat operations. The 123rd Aviation Battalion was activated as the division's aviation battalion when the 161st Assault Helicopter Company was deactivated. The 161st Assault Helicopter Company's "Slick" troop transport aircraft of the A Company "Pelicans" and the "B" Company "Scorpions" Gunships were renamed and assigned to 123rd Aviation Battalion's "C" TCompany Aero Scouts "Warlords". The unique "B" Company came equipped with its own Airmobile Infantry section as well as Light Observation Helicopters and Gunships and is equally adept at providing reconnaissance support for infantry elements and meeting the enemy on its own. On 15 Dec 1968 the 123rd Aviation Battalion comprised of "A" Company, "B" Company, 406th Transport Detachment and the 449th Signal Detachment were attached to the 16th Combat Aviation Group. In Jan 1969, two CH-47 Companies the 132nd and 178th Assault Support Helicopter Companies were attached to the 123rd Aviation Battalion. The 123rd served in Vietnam until deactivation in November 1971 when the Battalion stood-down.
