282nd Assault Helicopter Company - 3rd Platoon Gunships - "Alley Cats" 1st Original Design (Provided by John Silberman "Alley Cats" 1969-70) - The 282nd Assault Helicopter Company was activated at Fort Benning, Georgia on 7 October 1965. The Company was deployed to Republic of Vietnam in May and June of 1966. They made their base camp at Marble Mountain Airfield southeast of Da Nang and were assigned to the 212th Combat Aviation Battalion of the 16th Combat Aviation Group. The 282nd initially flew missions in I Corps & II Corps in support of MACV, SF, LRRP, Ranger and Hac Bao units. This included elements of the USMC, USAF, USN, ARVN and the Aussies. Their area of operation was as far north as Hue Citadel,south to Dong Ba Thin, west to Ban Me Thuot and Kontum. The 282nd 2nd Flight Platoon A.O. also included a section in Quang Tri and flew missions regularly to the DMZ in support of A1 and A3 and west into the Ashau Valley. The 282nd 1st and 2nd Flight Platoons call-sign, "Black Cat" was assigned to the company on 23 May 1966. The Black Cat patch was the original Crest and was used by the entire company. In March of 1967 the "Lift" or "Slick" Platoons adopted the crest which graces the front of each lift helicopter and strikes terror into the hearts of every enemy whose paths they cross. The 282nd flew UH-1 (Huey) helicopters consisting of three flight platoons. First and Second Flight Platoons were armed with an M-60 Machine Guns on each side. Each aircraft commander was assigned a permanent call-sign. "Black Cat Number" which was used by his crew instead of the ID number of the aircraft being flown. The Black Cat's flew Med-e-vac, Combat Assaults, LRRP Insertions and Extractions, delivered hot food, water, ammo, mail, batteries, and beer to troops and Special Forces base camps, artillery observation out posts and other mission as required. The Third Flight Platoon Gunships adopted the call-sign and Crest of the "Alley Cat" in March 1967. The gunships flew heavily armed Huey UH-1B's, C's, and AH-1 Cobra's. The "Alley Cat" were known for their tenacity, courage and cunning in the face of danger and were known to have "Brass Balls". The Alley Cat is displayed on the front of each gunship, making them a prime target for ground fire. The Alley Cat's were the armed Gunships platoon that providing aerial escort and support for all Black Cat missions.
