Description

4th Aviation Battalion, "A" Company "Black Jacks" Patch - The 4th Aviation Battalion was organized at Fort Lewis, Washington, in July 1963. The first Commander of the 4th Aviation Battalion was Major William Kaufman. The 4th Aviation Battalion was activated in November 1963 and deployed to the Republic of Vietnam in September 1966 with the deployment of the 4th Infantry Division. The advance party arrived in-country 25 September 1966 and were sent to Pleiku in the II Corp area and assigned to Dragon Mountain area as their base. The second group of the 4th Aviation flew in by plane in a C141 and arrived on the 9 January 1967. The Camp was known as Dragon Mountain until early 1967. Dragon Mountain was one of the most dangerous areas. In early 1967 Dragon Mountain Base Camp under went a name change and became known as Camp Enari, in memory of Lieutenant Mark N. Enari as he earned the Silver Star while fighting the North Vietnamese regulars in the Central Highlands of II Corps. Lt. Enari died as a result of the wounds he received during that battle. In January 1967, the 'A Company' of the 4th Aviation Battalion arrived at Pleiku Air Base. 'A' Company had several call signs, they were known as 'Black Jacks' and each platoon had another call sign early on such as 1st Platoon was the 'Lizards' because they were the VIP flight platoon, the 2nd Platoon was the 'Rustlers' and the 3rd Platoon were the 'Renegades', and the fixed wing platoon were the 'Buzzards'. The company logo was the cards of Ace of Spades and the Jack of Diamonds. 'B' Company Gunships only had one call sign and it was 'Gambler'. The Ace of Spade Logo was painted on our Gunships noses, sides, tail and top of each aircraft. The 4th Infantry Division area covered the entire II Corp area of the Central Highlands. This area was considered the Viet Cong's Highway for transporting forces and supplies from the north to the south. In early 1970 the battalion moved to An Khe with the rest of the 4th Division after the 1st Cavalry pulled out in 1969. The 4th Aviation Battalion stood-down and left Vietnam for the states on 7 December 1970 to Fort Carson, Colorado and Fort Hood, Texas.
