Tribute To The Great Geronimo - Gerinimo was a Mescalero-Chiricahua from the Bedonkohe Band of the Apache Tribe. He was not a chief; he was a prominent leader and Medicine Man. He was born June 16, 1829 at Arizpe, Mexico in what is now the state of New Mexico near Turkey Creek, a tributary of the Gila River. His grandfather, Mahko, had been chief of the Bedonkohe Apache. He had three brothers and four sisters. Geronimo married a woman named Alope, from the Nedni-Chiricahua Band of Apache when he was 17; they had three children. She was the first of nine wives. On March 5, 1858 Mexican soldiers from Sonora led by Colonel José María Carrasco attacked Geronimo's camp among those killed were his wife, children and mother. The loss of his family led Geronimo to hate all Mexicans for the rest of his life Geronimo was driven by a desire to take revenge for the murder of his family. In 1850 Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache Bands - Tchihende, Tsokanende, and Nednhi and they carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. Military in the Northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Raiding became embedded in the Apache way of life. Gerinimo refused to give in to American Government demands. Geronimo's had super-natural gifts that he used for good or ill. His awareness of distant events allowed him to anticipate future events, and he had the gift to heal. In 1885 after Geronimo's third 1885 reservation breakout an intense pursuit by the American Cavalry led by General Nelson Miles and 5,000 soldiers, and nearly 5,000 civilian they were unsuccessful at bring Geronimo in. Geronimo surrendered for the last time to Lt. Charles Bare Gatewood, an Apache-speaking West Point Graduate who had earned Geronimo's respect. Geronimo was transferred into General Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon, just north of the Mexican-American border. Miles treated Geronimo as a prisoner of war and acted promptly to move Geronimo to Bowie Station, Arizona where he and 27 other Apaches were sent to Florida. On February 17, 1909, Gerinimo died from Gun Shot Wound in the Fort Sill Army Hospital in Oklahoma. Geronimo is buried at Beef Creek Apache Cemetery hear Lawton, Oklahoma among the graves of relatives and other Apache Prisoners of War.
