Tribute To The Great Crazy Horse -
Crazy Horse was an Oglala Lakota Sioux born in the early 1840s in the
Black Hills near the border of what is now South Dakota and Wyoming. Crazy Horse’s father named his son “Tashunka Witco”, translated into English meaning "He Who's Horse Is Crazy" or “Crazy Horse”. Crazy Horse was one of the greatest Indian Warrior of the nineteenth century. His victory over Custer at the battle of Little Bighorn in Montana in the summer of 1876 during the Great Sioux War was the worst defeat ever inflicted on the frontier army. The government ordered all the Sioux onto the reservation, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull refused to bring in their people to the reservation. In an attempt to establish a Peace Treaty Crazy Horse and a small delegation of Lakota Sioux went to Fort Robinson, Nebraska to discuss peace. Upon arrival General George Crook ordered Crazy Horse's arrest. Realizing his betrayal Crazy Horse peacefully surrendered to federal troops. Captain James Kennington, the Officer in charge of the post guard accompanied Crazy Horse to the post guardhouse. Once inside, Crazy Horse was murdered when a member of the guards stabbed Crazy Horse in the back with a bayonet. According to military records Crazy Horse died just before midnight on the night of September 5, 1877. At the age of 35 Crazy Horse lay dead. Some say Crazy Horse was murdered for revenge for his participation in the massacre of the 1st of the 7th U.S. Cavalry led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his men in what is known as “Custer’s Last Stand” at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Crazy Horse’s body was taken by the Sioux and buried at an unknown location near a creek called Wounded Knee. The last major armed conflict between U.S. Government Troops and the Lakota Sioux occurred during the massacre of One Hundred and Fifty unarmed Lakota Sioux Women, Children, and Elders at Wounded Knee, South Dakota bring a close to the Great Sioux War.
